Advancing Judicial Understanding of International Protection: SHARP–IOM–KPJA Consultative Workshop

Reflecting SHARP enduring commitment to integrity and human rights, SHARP—in collaboration with IOM Pakistan and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Judicial Academy (KPJA)—organized a two-day consultative workshop for judicial officers on “International Protection, Legal Framework, and Durable Solutions” at KPJA, Peshawar. Mr. Jahanzeb Shinwari, Director General KPJA, joined the session as Chief Guest, accompanied by Mr. Liaqat Banori, Chairman SHARP, highlighting SHARP’s commitment to enhancing judicial understanding of protection-related jurisprudence.
 
The opening session, chaired by Ms. Hina Khan, Senior Director Research & Publications, KPJA, welcomed participants and appreciated the organizers’ capacity-building efforts. Mr. Salman Farooq, Protection Officer, moderated, while Ms. Memoona Batool Khan, Project Director SHARP, and Mr. Amir Hamza briefed participants on SHARP’s mandate and IOM’s ongoing interventions.
 
Sessions featured Mr. Nadeem Farid, Head of the Law Department, on human and fundamental rights within national and international legal frameworks; Mr. Sahibzada Younas (UNHCR) on international protection and durable solutions; Mr. Zia Ur Rehman, Advocate Supreme Court, on citizenship laws; and Barrister Amir Ullah on the Foreigners Act and its legal implications.
 
At the closing session, Mr. Liaqat Banori delivered the vote of thanks, highlighting the importance of informed, rights-based judicial decisions in strengthening protection and access to justice.
 
In his closing remarks, Mr. Jahanzeb Shinwari praised the workshop for its role in enhancing judicial knowledge, promoting best practices, and advancing the professional development of officers in protection-related matters. The workshop concluded with certificate distribution and the exchange of commemorative shields, symbolizing mutual appreciation and partnership.
