SHARP ALAC team in Peshawar held a one-day consultative workshop at Peshawar Barracks, engaging 33 prison officials from across KP. The session focused on refugee rights, international protection, legal aid, and prison reforms. With participation from UNHCR, CAR, and the KP Prisons Department, the event reinforced SHARP’s commitment to collaborative efforts in protecting vulnerable detainees and strengthening justice systems.
Ms. Memoona Batool Khan, Project Director (KP), opened the workshop by highlighting SHARP’s role in promoting legal aid and justice for refugees and vulnerable detainees. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and civil society to uphold detainees’ rights.
Mr. Sahibzada Younas (UNHCR) outlined international protection obligations for refugees. Mr. Fazal Rabbi (CAR) highlighted CAR’s coordination role in refugee support. Mr. Manzoor Ali (SHARP) emphasized the legal rights of detained refugees. Mr. Asad Afridi (SHARP) shared SHARP’s legal aid and referral efforts. Mr. Ameen Shoaib (DIG Prisons, KP) discussed ongoing prison reforms and rights-based improvements.
In his remarks, Chief Guest Mr. Muhammad Usman Mehsud, Inspector General (IG) Prisons KP, lauded SHARP and partners for organizing a timely and impactful workshop. He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to advancing prison reforms and safeguarding the rights of all detainees, including refugees and asylum seekers.
SHARP CEO Mr. Mudassar Javed concluded the workshop by appreciating all participants and reaffirming SHARP’s commitment to institutional collaboration for refugee protection and prison reform. He emphasized the vital role of prison officials in upholding detainees’ rights and called for continued engagement to strengthen a rights-based justice system.
