SHARP commenced its World Refugee Day 2025 celebrations with a vibrant and inclusive event in Islamabad, dedicated to honouring the diverse cultures, resilience, and contributions of refugee communities. The event was graced by UNHCR Asst. Representatives (Protection) Ms. Kiran Kaur, and Wajiha Afzal, Assistant Community-Based Protection Officer, and led by SHARP’s senior leadership, including Chairman Mr. Liaqat Banori, CEO Mr. Mudassar Javed, and Project Director Mr. Aatif Afzal, refugees from different communities, and SHARP team members.
In his welcome address, Mr. Mudassar Javed, CEO of SHARP, warmly welcomed all guests, extending heartfelt congratulations on the occasion. He emphasized the strength, dedication, and meaningful contributions of refugees toward building a more inclusive and progressive society. He also praised the tireless efforts and commitment of the SHARP team, acknowledging their role in championing refugee rights and delivering impactful services nationwide. The event featured a rich array of cultural activities, including Threads of Solidarity—a collaborative art activity, musical chairs, a solidarity music jam, and an interactive discussion that showcased the traditions of various communities. SHARP also took the opportunity to recognize and appreciate refugee members who have become an integral part of the SHARP family, applauding their continuous efforts in advancing SHARP’s mission.
While participating in the celebrations, Ms. Kiran Kaur, UNHCR representative, shared her heartfelt greetings with attendees and expressed deep appreciation for the spirit of unity, cultural exchange, and inclusion reflected throughout the event. She acknowledged the important role that refugee voices play in shaping vibrant communities and commended SHARP for creating a platform that not only celebrates diversity but also fosters dignity and a sense of belonging.
Project Director Mr. Aatif Afzal reaffirmed SHARP’s commitment to supporting refugee communities across the country. He called for collective responsibility among humanitarian actors, civil society, and host communities to uphold the rights and well-being of refugees, and reiterated SHARP’s pledge to stand in solidarity, service, and support with displaced populations across Pakistan.
In his closing remarks, Chairman Mr. Liaqat Banori emphasized the profound significance of World Refugee Day as a global call to recognize the dignity, struggles, and aspirations of millions of displaced individuals. He commended UNHCR’s vital role in protecting and empowering refugees and acknowledged the long-standing partnership between SHARP and UNHCR in advancing refugee rights in Pakistan.
The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and a lively cultural performance, marking the beginning of the celebration of unity, hope and resilience.
