Two-Day Consultative Workshop in Karachi with Judicial Officers on Refugee Protection

SHARP-Pakistan, in collaboration with Sindh Judicial Academy, organized a Consultative Workshop on International Protection & Legal Framework for Refugees in Pakistan.

Key Discussions Included:
  • International Protection & Legal Framework – 1951 Geneva Convention, Non-Refoulement, and Refugee Rights
  • Status of Refugees in Pakistan – Durable Solutions, Legal Rights, and Policy Framework
  • Judicial Decision-Making in Refugee Cases – Real-world scenarios and legal interpretations
  • Foreigners Act 1946 & Refugee Protection – Challenges and Concerns
  • Government Policies on Refugee Protection – Key updates and implementation strategies
  • Trafficking in Persons & Juvenile Justice Act 2020 – Legal frameworks and protection mechanisms
Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro (Judge, Sindh High Court & DG, Sindh Judicial Academy) emphasized the importance of judicial awareness on refugee protection, stating: “Judicial officers play a pivotal role in ensuring justice and protection for vulnerable communities, including refugees. Strengthening legal understanding and practical application of international protection principles is essential for a fair and just system.”
Mr. Mudassar Javed (CEO, SHARP) reaffirmed SHARP’s commitment, saying: “For over two decades, SHARP has been at the forefront of advocating refugee rights and legal aid in Pakistan. This workshop is another step towards fostering judicial engagement and strengthening the legal framework for refugee protection.”
Legal Manager Mr. Manzoor Ali and PO Mr. Ilam-ud-din also facilitated the sessions. The workshop concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony and a group photograph, marking a collective commitment to upholding refugee rights in Pakistan.
