To advance human rights and international protection within Pakistan’s prison system, SHARP Pakistan, in collaboration with UNHCR, organized a one-day capacity-building workshop at the Prisons Staff Training Academy (PSTA), Haripur, bringing together 25 prison officers and officials, including female warders.
The workshop was graced by Mr. Umair Khan, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Regional Prisons Office Hazara, as Chief Guest, while the SHARP team was led by Mr. Mudassar Javed, CEO, SHARP Pakistan. The programme commenced with welcome remarks by Ms. Fouzia Taj, Commandant, PSTA.
Technical sessions were facilitated by Mr. Manzoor Ali, Manager Legal; Mr. Fahad Javed, Field Manager; Ms. Tasneem Ehsan, Lawyer, SHARP Pakistan; and Mr. Sahibzada Younas, Focal Person, UNHCR, covering human rights, constitutional safeguards, international protection, durable solutions, and prison reforms under the Prisons Act, 1894, including the 2020 amendments.
In his remarks, Mr. Mudassar Javed appreciated the support of Ms. Fouzia Taj and the PSTA administration and reaffirmed SHARP Pakistan’s commitment to continued collaboration with UNHCR and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prisons Department.
Concluding the workshop, Mr. Umair Khan emphasized the importance of institutional capacity building and safeguarding human rights in correctional facilities, while appreciating the joint efforts of SHARP Pakistan and UNHCR. The workshop reinforced SHARP’s commitment to human rights and institutional capacity building.
